[edit] Introduction
You are a member of an organization known simply as 'The Hunters' This is an independently funded and operated organization with the goal of locating and destroying evil in all its forms wherever it is found. The organization currently spans 4 continents and is made up of over two hundred cells with at least a dozen members in each. Each cell is given complete autonomy in their region of operations and for security reasons is only given the ability to contact a limited number of other cells. New vital information and technological discoveries are dispersed quickly in a chain throughout the entire organization whenever achieved by any individual cell through a number of different means, from electronic communications to spiritual relays, to human messengers.
Our story involves a new cell marked as AN734, codename "Tension Squad", currently assigned to a town in middle america called "Gainsbrook" where the psions of Tension Squad's parental cell, AN727 codename "Vector Squad" have detected the presence of a minor demon.
All players are new recruits, fresh out of the "Camp Impulse" training center.
[edit] Recruitment
Recruiting new members for The Hunters is a difficult task. Not simply because of the clandestine nature of the organization, but also because willingness and aptitude of potentials is a rare thing.
Two things are looked for in a potential: abilities far beyond the ordinary in whatever field they are being recruited for, and an awareness, however slight, of existence beyond the physical. The latter can be determined either through testing the individual's spiritual aptitude or through hearing news of a spiritual occurance which the potential reacted to with acceptance, instead of the denial which is the common human response.
Once recruited, members are sent to one of the many training camps where they undergo lengthy tests and training in their selected field.
[edit] Equipment
Weapons and equipment used by The Hunters are extremely varied. Every cell has their own master technician(s) who tailor the equipment for every member of the cell personally, depending on their individual needs and preferences. There are, however, a few standard pieces of equipment that almost all cells utilize.
EFM (Energy Field Masker): This is a small device worn either as a brooch or a belt buckle which emits a low powered energy distortion field around it. The result is that it masks the aura of any individual wearing an EFM, or is otherwise very close to it, making them both undetectable through spirit sight and making their aura seem plain and uninteresting. Caution must still be taken while wearing an EFM as it only works against a casual glance - if anybody examines the wearer with a bit of scrutiny they will be able to see through the ruse. Without an EFM and without psionic shielding training a hunter's aura will be clearly distinguishable from any other mortal, thus an EFM, or something similar, is a required piece of equipment for anyone venturing outside of The Hunters' base of operations. A larger and more powerful version of the EFM is used to protect all hunter home bases, making the wearing of a personal EFM within it unnecessary.
Rune of Piercing: This gaelic rune is inscribed on most Hunter weapons, including individual bullets. Inscribing the rune is a lengthy and tedious ritual and requires the blood of a shade, fae or synthetic substitute. Without this rune or one similar a weapon will be unable to affect a creature native to the spiritual realm, even while manifest physically. Psions trained in energy manipulation can instead psionically charge a weapon for a similar effect, though only temporarily. These psions claim that their charge is more powerful than the rune and also that the rune disrupts their ability to charge their weapons and thus prefer not to use them.
Rune of Greater Piercing: This gaelic rune is far more time consuming to inscribe and requires several other rare and expensive ingredients. Its potency, however, allows a physical weapon to strike a spiritual foe who is currently in The Lower Edge. It also naturally slices through and wounds the aura of any mortal attacked with one of these weapons. Psionic masters are also capable of charging a weapon to this degree, but it is very taxing on them. Most psions at this level prefer to simply combat shades found in the edge through pure energy manipulation. Cells generally have at least one weapon available with this rune inscribed upon it.
"Static" Grenade: This weapon was developed by Dr. Pikket, professor of quantum physics and accepted as the current greatest genius within The Hunters. A production facility for these weapons exists in Momentum Labs where Dr. Pikket continues his research and every cell always has a few on hand. They appear and act identically to flash grenades, creating a brilliant flash of light when activated and thrown. The reaction, however, also produces a high volume of randomly fluctuating psionic energy in the area. This has the effect of stunning any person or creature caught within its blast radius with telepathic or empathic abilities and not properly shielded due to an overload of random input. It also creates a 'cloud of light' which blocks the senses of anyone dwelling within the lower edge who is in the area and blinds anyone with opened Spirit Sight at the time of detonation.
Density Field: This is a large device also invented by Dr. Pikket, about the size and weight of a 32 inch television and is usually built as a backpack. When active it thickens the barrier between worlds in the immediate area, making it difficult for anything to pass from the physical world into the lower edge or vice versa.
