[edit] Types of Equipment
There are two kinds of objects: Tools and Devices.
Tools are used to aid in the performance of a task. Essentially, a tool grants a skill bonus to a particular roll. Tools may also change the outcome of a skill roll by increasing the effect.
Devices on the other hand operate autonomously or semi-autonomously and make their own rolls for effect. Devices may require a skill roll to use or operate. Some
For example, a telescope is an object which helps a person Spot distant objects. A sonar would be a device which spots distant objects on its own.
[edit] Tools
Tools can grant a bonus to a skill roll in general or in a specific situation. It can also grant a bonus to several situations. Tools can grant bonuses ranging from +1 to +5. For example, a knife is a tool which grants a +1 bonus on Light Melee rolls to make an attack.
Tools can also change the outcome of a roll. For example, the normal outcome on a Light Melee roll is 1 Wound/Degree (scaling upwards). A Sword's effect would be 2 Wounds/Degree (scaling upwards).
Some skill rolls cannot be made without a tool, or suffer a heavy penalty. Such rolls may have Required Tools which do not grant a bonus but only enable the character to make a roll.
A person can also make use of Improvised Tools. These are objects not designed to aid at a specific task, but may be used anyways. Improvised Tools never give more than a +1 bonus. If a task has a Required Tool then certain improvised tools may be used to allow said task to be performed. The task will most likely still be performed at a penalty, however.
[edit] Devices
There are two types of devices: Autonomous and Semi-Autonomous.
Autonomous Devices are objects which perform tasks on their own Such devices may need to be set up or activated before operating. For example, grenades are devices which, once activated and thrown, create an explosive effect.
Semi-Autonomous Devices are objects which translate one activity on the part of a User into the performance of a different task. For example, a Car translates a driver's steering into motion.
Autonomous Devices may take a skill check to set up, usually a technical skill. Once that is done it has its own listed bonus for its own skill check roll.
Semi-Autonomous Devices can either operate as Tools or as Autonomous Devices.
